Our story begins in the 19th century, yet it lives on in every carefully restored space, in each season-inspired spa treatment, and in every guest who finds a moment of peace within these walls.

A legacy in the clouds

A history shaped by healing

Our story begins in the late 1800s, when soldier Xaver Stehlin returned from the Franco-Prussian War carrying invisible wounds. Following the advice of his doctors, he came to the Black Forest in search of peace. What he discovered atop Blauen Mountain was more than fresh air, it was a profound sense of renewal.

Together with family and friends, Xaver built a modest guesthouse in 1875. His vision took root during a flourishing era of tourism that transformed the region into a sanctuary for artists, aristocrats, and adventurers. Over time, Hochblauen expanded in both scale and spirit, eventually becoming a one of a kind mountain hotel in Germany.

In 1889 and 1890, its distinctive architecture emerged, with bold angles that soon graced postcards across Europe. The construction of the first observation tower in 1895 unveiled sweeping vistas of the Alps, the Jura, and the Vosges, establishing Hochblauen as symbol of awe and serenity.

Electricity was introduced in 1925, followed by central heating in 1958. Across generations, the Haas family, descendants of Xaver, safeguarded the warm and human essence of the hotel, welcoming travelers from every horizon into a retreat rooted in authenticity and care.

This breathtaking panorama became an integral part of the Hochblauen experience and helped cement its reputation as a beloved mountain hotel in Germany.

In the early 2000s, Hochblauen quietly awaited renewal. Ownership changed, visions emerged and faded, yet the soul of the hotel remained. Patient, resilient, and waiting.

Today, we carry that soul into the future. We have restored Hochblauen not by erasing its past, but by honoring it. Every beam, every stone, every room embodies our commitment to sustainability and enduring hospitality.
